Out of this came the idea of 'stealth' aircraft like the legendary SR-71 Blackbird, which provided the inspiration for this highly-modified Audi R8 from New York.

Like its winged counterpart, the Audi R8 ‘Blackbird’ features a sleek design, stunning performance and a host of stealthy electronic countermeasures for the road. Built by New York-based 'Ai Designs', the car has enough gadgets to give a military vehicle a run for its money, including a recently installed Passport 9500ci - an integrated laser detection and laser shifting unit. According to the company that builds the unit, Escort, speeding tickets will be a thing of the past thanks to the Passport's ability to absorb a laser signal and send a scrambled signal back to the source.

A built-in iPhone is used to check speed trap locations on the Internet and constantly update the car's library of red-light cameras and speed cameras, making it difficult for even the most ham fisted drivers to be caught by the constabulary.

With all of that stealth technology tucked underneath the car's dashboard, the R8 Blackbird exterior is the only giveaway that there’s something very special lurking within its sheet metal. Custom 20in forged wheels in a glossy black color sit at each corner, while the brake hats, rotors and exhaust tips are all coated in a flat black paint scheme. Finally, a Capristo sports exhaust with computer controlled valves allows the driver to make the R8 Blackbird as loud or quiet as they desire.

Two engines to choose from at the moment; the 2.0-litre TFSI from the Golf GTI and a 3.2-litre V6. The 197bhp turbo four is the punchier unit and has little or no turbo lag – it feels more sporty, gets to 62mph in 6.6 seconds and tops out at 149mph. The V6 is lazier, has 247bhp and weighs more – meaning 0-62mph in a similar 5.9 seconds and a limited 155mph top speed. Great noise though.

Handling

The front-drive versions handle exceptionally well, with the two-litre four-pots feeling like an even more sorted Golf GTI. The Quattro cars are grippy, but not as much fun – they’re much heavier and tend toward understeer. Forthcoming ‘S’ with S3 engine should make the point in spectacular fashion.

Practicality

Not bad for a small coupe. The boot is reasonable and space inside is pretty comfortable for tall people. Quite hard to park because the car slopes away at the ends, but it’s not a huge deal.

Audi Shark - A Cool Concept Car!

The Audi Shark is a cool futuristic flying concept vehicle with a streamlined design inspired by motorcycles and airplanes. It was designed by Kazim Doku and won the Desire Competition by Domus Academy.





Hover cars always looked cool on Star Wars and Star Trek. But the Audi Shark looks even better than that! This magnificent baby is devised by designer Kazim Doku, who is known to have redesigned Audi’s usual sleek stylings into a flying sportscar for the Desire Design Competition by the Italian Domus Academy.




I’m guessing the two-seater shark uses compressed air mechanism or high powered fans and the Console is placed between the legs, which might seem a little shoddy for some. But then again, there is a fine distinction between a Hovercar and a Sports car, so it ought to be compact in its design. It will look comfortable on a Sci-Fi set, but we’ve had enough of that. It’s time we grab one for ourselves!
